Data analysis with R training with Eco-Explore

Eco-Explore is one of BCT’s training partners and together offer online training in using R to analyse bat data. For every place on one of these courses, BCT receives 25% of the course fees. There is an introductory course for complete novices or those with only a little experience (Introduction to analysing bat data with R) as well as a follow-on course offering the opportunity to learn more advanced techniques (Learning advanced techniques in R for bat data analysis).

All the courses are held on Zoom and feature live interactive training, so you are able to ask questions and get help as you go along.

Introduction to analysing bat data with R (3 day online course)

This introductory level course will take you from complete beginner to statistical modeller in 3 days!

The course combines a gentle but ample introduction to R with an introduction to statistics (it’s not a statistics class but it will enable you to have a greater understanding of the analysis of your bat data.). It supports your progression with practical activities based on pre-prepared data initially up to working on your own data by the end of the course.

Upcoming dates: We do not currently have any dates scheduled for this course.

For information on how we process your data, follow this link

Course content will include:

  • What questions can be answered with your bat data?
  • Data handling – getting your data ready for analysis
  • Data visualisation
  • What is data analysis?
  • General Linear Models
  • How to turn your questions into R script
  • Progression through practical activities, starting with pre-prepared data initially and working up to analysing your own data by the end of the course.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Use the CSV data output from your bat detector and make it ready for R
  • Understand what questions can be answered using your data
  • Plot your data for clear, understandable and eye-catching reports including histograms, box plots, density maps, etc
  • Understand what data analysis is and why it is needed
  • Use General Linear Models to find relationships within your bat data
  • Translate your questions into R script for analysis
  • Apply these techniques to your own bat data

Course prerequisites: No prior knowledge of R or statistics is required but a computer with admin permissions is required. Basic understanding of bats and some experience of bat detectors is useful.

Tutor: Dr Jez Smith and Dr Mike Shewring, Eco-Explore

Cost: £400

Discounts: £5 discount for BCT members

CPD: A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded that can be used as evidence for CPD.

Learning advanced techniques in R for bat data analysis (2 day online course)

This follow-on course moves beyond General Linear Modelling to more advanced techniques, such as General Linear Mixed Models, General Additive Models and General Additive Mixed Models, enabling you to investigate patterns such as seasonal trends using non-linear models.

Upcoming dates: We do not currently have any dates scheduled for this course.

Eco-Explore is a scientific research and communication company, established in 2010 run by a team of practical ecologists and academics. We have 32 years of collective experience teaching R to a range of participants and answering biological questions. Our passion extends from the ability to listen to somebodies ideas and data and turn those into testable hypotheses and analysis and then watch as those people do the same for themselves.
