Funded by the Nature Networks Fund from the National Lottery Heritage Fund through Natural Resources Wales, the Gobaith Coetir/Woodland Hope Project aims to assess the health of a set of Celtic rainforest sites in North Wales, whilst bridging the gap between local communities and their woodland heritage.

Using bats to measure woodland health

This project spans over 2 years until March 2025 and will work around the Meirionnydd Oakwoods, where a range of bat species call their home, including the charismatic and rare lesser horseshoe bat. Wales is a very important stronghold for this species in the UK, with 61% of their UK population present in the country and many of their roosts and foraging habitats are protected. For example, the focus woodlands for this project include Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), with designation for lesser horseshoe bats. However, the status or ‘health’ of most of these Celtic rainforest sites is either unknown or unfavourable. Being bioindicators of the habitats they inhabit, bats make an ideal model for assessing woodland health. This project aims to assess woodland health using passive acoustic monitoring devices. We also aim to support and advise about action on the ground to bring woodland SSSI into improved condition.

Mae’r prosiect hwn yn cwmpasu mwy na 2 flynedd, a bydd yn gweithio o amgylch Coed Derw Meirion, sy’n gartref i amrywiaeth o rywogaethau ystlumod, gan gynnwys yr ystlum pedol lleiaf, sy’n garismataidd a phrin. Mae Cymru’n gadarnle pwysig dros ben i’r rhywogaeth hon yn y Deyrnas Unedig, gan mai yn y wlad hon y ceir 61% o’u poblogaeth yn y Deyrnas Unedig, ac mae llawer o’u safleoedd clwydo a’u cynefinoedd fforio yn cael eu diogelu. Er enghraifft, mae’r coetiroedd sy’n ffocws ar gyfer y prosiect hwn yn cynnwys Ardaloedd Cadwraeth Arbennig (ACA) a Safleoedd o Ddiddordeb Gwyddonol Arbennig (SoDdGA), a ddynodwyd ar gyfer yr ystlum pedol lleiaf. Connecting people with their woodland heritage
Our team aim to work closely with local partners, communities and organisations, to connect people with their woodland heritage, with a focus on upskilling and engaging a new generation of volunteers from a range of backgrounds. We also aim to increase the resilience of woodland monitoring in North Wales and support the development of a network of volunteers that can continue the legacy of the project into the future.
The project will include a range of exciting events, outreach, and volunteering opportunities, for people of all ages, backgrounds and skill.

Ein nod hefyd yw cynyddu gwydnwch monitro coetir yng ngogledd Cymru a chefnogi datblygiad rhwydwaith o wirfoddolwyr sy’n gallu cynnal etifeddiaeth y prosiect i’r dyfodol.

Our team
Nicky Fish started as our new Wales Officer in March 2023, funded as part of the Gobaith Coetir/Woodland Hope Project. Nicky is based in the north of Snowdonia. We also have a new Assistant Project Officer for Gobaith Coetir, Elliot Bastos, who based in the South of Snowdonia.
