Reform essential to tackle rising wildlife crime and ‘appallingly low’ number of convictions

The second Annual Wildlife Crime Report, produced by members of the Wildlife and Countryside Link and Wales Environment Link coalitions, reveals that reported terrestrial wildlife crime incidents against bats, badgers and birds of prey rose by an average of 24% last year, with the number of wildlife crimes incidents reported rising by 9% overall.

Partnership for Biodiversity in Planning - Wildlife Assessment Check

The Partnership for Biodiversity in Planning is seeking to increase awareness about the need for background biodiversity checks, by local authorities as well as by householders and developers. The partnership, involving 18 organisations, has developed an online tool – the Wildlife Assessment Check – to help indicate when expert ecological input is required as a part of a planning application.

The latest review of the legislation protecting wildlife has concluded that the challenges associated with the protection of internationally important bat populations in England arise from how the legislation that protect bats are implemented, and not with the laws themselves
