Help fight the threats to bats

Donate via Justgiving now!

Bats are under threat like never before.  Attacks in the media, misrepresentation in the press and policy makers ignoring their needs are all undermining our conservation efforts.  Bats have adapted to live alongside us in our homes, gardens, cities and the countryside but this means they are increasingly vulnerable to people’s attitudes and actions.

Over the last six months there has been a worrying shift in attitudes both in the media and from the public.  We have seen campaigns against bats and the legislation protecting them.  The need to mitigate the effects of building development on bat populations has been challenged.  And bats are once again being portrayed as pests,  unappreciated and unwanted in the home, or causing extra costs untold damage and havoc, or even standing in the way of development and growth.  This a massive step backwards; it is not only disheartening but also dangerous for bats and damaging to bat conservation.

Fear and misunderstanding have caused many problems for bats in the past and continue to harm populations in many parts of the world today.  We can’t and won’t let this continue.  We have seen a rise in the number of suspected bat crimes reported to us and our Bat Helpline has answered substantially more queries and concerns about bats in 2011 than ever before.  The effect is cumulative, and is particularly worrying if these misconceptions become prevalent amongst those members of the public that have roosts in their homes, those who are directly responsible for future generations of bats.

Please help by donating however much you can.

The Bat Conservation Trust is challenging the misreprentation of bats and speaking up for their needs to combat negative attitudes.  We continue to make the case for bats at every opportunity.  The government’s proposed planning reform was initially heavily in favour of development and moved away from true sustainability, a shift that could mean bats are squeezed out of the few homes they have left. But by working with conservation partners we are raising our concerns and prompting a rethink.

Through our Bat Helpline, events and education activities we are engaging the public with the wonder of bats alongside working with volunteer bat groups to champion bats locally.

Our vision is of a world where bats and people thrive together and by working closely with the media, government and the public we are able to change attitudes and inspire understanding and appreciation of bats.   As a supporter of the Bat Conservation Trust you are already adding your voice to ours in speaking up for bats, but if you can give, even a small donation, this will help us achieve so much more.

  • £10 will allow a Helpline Officer to  address concerns from a member of the public about bats

  • £50 could help provide materials for bat box building workshops to inspire local communities

  • £250 will enable us to educate policy makers and MPs at BCT’s parliamentary bat event

  • £25,000 will fund a full time press officer to speak out for bats
