About our 'Surveying trees for bats' course:

You would like to contribute to bat conservation further by learning a new set of surveying skills. Developed by expert ecologist Rich Flight, this one day course builds on your existing knowledge and experience of bat surveying to broaden your versatility as an ecologist by providing you with an comprehensive knowledge of trees and the techniques needed to survey them effectively.

This is the third of a series of four courses designed to train anyone involved in bat work to a professional standard; whether you're working towards your level one bat license, or you just want to improve your practical skills.

'Surveying trees for bats' course content:

The course combines theoretical classroom sessions with a practical exercise outside. This course is designed as a follow-up to our Bat Ecology and Conservation and Surveying for Bats. Take a look at the curriculum covered in the previous two courses to see if you have the necessary knowledge to fully benefit from our Surveying Trees for Bats course.

  • Legislation regarding trees and bat roosts
  • Use of trees by bats
  • Survey methodologies
  • H&S requirements for safe tree surveys
  • How to recognise signs of bat usage in trees
  • Evaluate potential tree roosts
  • An initial tree survey for bat roosts and use of appropriate survey equipment
