About our 'Bats and Arboriculture - Combined course':

No prior knowledge needed Approx. 11 hours to complete (one full day and a half-day session). Prices start at £275 (BCT members receive a discount). Lantra or BCT CPD certificate upon completion.

You want to build awareness develop you skills and awareness of bats to improve your ability to protect bats at work. With the help of expert tutors we will provide you with the awareness of bat ecology, behaviour and legal knowledge you need to carry out tree works with consideration for the potential effects on bats and their habitats. You will examine the methods that can be used to rule out the potential of features as suitable bat roosts. Through practical sessions you will also develop useful practical skills including appropriate use of endoscopes, and be given guidance on what can and cannot be done without a bat licence.

This course combines both our Scoping Surveys for Arborists and our Secondary Roost surveys course, allowing participants to complete their training on bats and arboriculture in a single course. Participants do not need any prior knowledge before attending this course.

Please note full use of an endoscope in bat surveys is only available to those with a bat license - this course will not complete negate the need to work with a bat ecologist in certain situations.

'Bats and Arboriculture - Combined course' content:

As a Lantra accredited course, our course counts towards Arboricultural Association CPD requirements and participants can receive a Lantra awards attendance certificate. Due to popular demand we offer this course in two formats:

  • Potential tree roost recognition
  • Practical exercise - complete scoping survey of trees
  • Tree roost recognition and basic visual assessment of trees for bat evidence
  • Introduction to a method statement on how to undertake secondary roost surveys, includes the use of endoscopes in bat work
  • Endoscopes: costs, range and how to use for bat work
  • Where to go for help and emergency procedures
  • Practical: how to carry out a secondary roost assessment, including use of an endoscope

This course is also available as an in-house course on request.

Pricing: In person (one full day): £310 with Lantra certificate or £275 with BCT certificate of attendance. The course contents and resources are the same for both options.
