NightWatch has connected thousands of people with wildlife in their neighbourhoods, breaking down barriers to nature and ensuring that urban bats get the protection they need. However, we urgently need to raise a minimum of £14,000 by June 2025 to keep the project going.

What is Project NightWatch?

Launched in 2021, NightWatch is the only UK project of its kind. It breaks down barriers that prevent people - especially those from minority ethnic backgrounds, lower-income communities, and people with disabilities - from connecting with nature. Through community science, NightWatch gives everyone a simple and accessible way to explore urban nightlife, from bats to foxes, badgers, and owls.

Participants, known as NightWatchers, receive an easy-to-use survey kit by post, including an audio sensor and prepaid return envelope. All they need to do is place the sensor outside overnight - on a balcony, in a garden, or on a windowsill - and then spend an hour watching and listening for other wildlife.

Our experts then analyse the recordings and send back a personalised report about the bats they’ve discovered, along with resources to inspire their journey into nature.

Why is NightWatch so important?

We all know that nature is vital for wellbeing. But 80% of people in England live in urban areas, where access to wildlife can be limited. Many under-represented groups face additional barriers - whether due to lack of green space, accessibility challenges, or cultural factors.

NightWatch offers a powerful, inclusive solution. By inviting new audiences to take part in bat conservation, we’re not only helping individuals experience the benefits of nature - we’re also collecting crucial data to protect urban bat populations and the green spaces they rely on.

Without NightWatch, we risk losing both a vital tool for urban bat conservation and a powerful way to connect under-represented communities with nature. We urgently need to raise £14,000 by June 2025 to keep this project running - can you help us make sure NightWatch continues?

The NightWatch story so far

Since 2021, NightWatchers have recorded thousands of bat detections across more than 750 sites in Britain. In 2023 alone, they collected so much data that if stored on floppy disks (remember them?), it would take 56 million of them - enough to cover 186 football fields!

But NightWatch is about more than just numbers. It’s about people.

  • Volunteer Champions are leading engagement, bringing NightWatch to new communities.
  • Local Coordinators are running bat walks and surveys, helping to inspire city-dwellers to get involved in conservation .
  • Community partners have helped us deliver events to over 2,000 people in urban areas, giving them their first hands-on experience of local wildlife.

We’ve learned that traditional outreach methods - like social media or advertising - aren’t enough to reach the communities we want to engage. That’s why we focus on direct, face-to-face engagement, working alongside local people to co-design events that truly resonate with their interests and needs.

NightWatch has already made a huge impact, engaging over 2,000 people and collecting thousands of bat records.

But all of this could end if we don’t reach our £14,000 target by June 2025. Your support can ensure we keep growing this community and protecting urban bats.

How you can help NightWatch grow

The future of NightWatch depends on you. Without additional funding, this incredible project is at risk of closing. Every donation gets us closer to our £14,000 goal - and keeps NightWatch going for another year.
