BCT is delighted to announce the publication of Bats and Large-Scale Housing Maintenance Projects Guidance for England.

The loss of natural roosts has increased the importance of buildings/houses and other man-made structures for bats. BCT recognises the importance of listening to and engaging with relevant sectors to deliver the best outcome possible for bats and people. This guidance is a result of a collaborative effort that addresses the needs of the communities and industries involved.

Why is guidance needed

Bats and Large-Scale Housing Maintenance Projects - guidance launched

The Bats and Large-Scale Housing Maintenance Projects guidance is designed to advise property owners, ecologists, architects and Natural England on how to take bats into account when managing extensive housing repairs/maintenance.

Experience and evidence show that typical guidelines for bat roost surveys and mitigation are not well-suited to large housing maintenance projects where there is limited potential for roosting bats and where the main focus is retention and repair rather than demolition.

The document represents the combined efforts of a Working Group who reviewed the evidence of considering bats in nine large-scale housing maintenance projects. More importantly, it provides guidance for similar projects.

A collaborative approach

The key to success when working with bats on large-scale housing maintenance projects is early and close working between the client (local authorities or other property owners) and ecologists, Natural England and architects. These guidelines have been written with these stakeholders in mind.

It is important to note that each project is unique and requires a bespoke approach that can only be achieved with collaboration. Similarly, close working with occupiers, contractors and other suppliers is also essential as projects progress.
