The smoothed index is currently 48.5% above the 1999 base year value, equivalent to an annual increase of 2.4%. The trend increased between 2006-2009 and again between 2014-2016; in other years it has been relatively stable. However at no point has it differed significantly from the baseline year and overall there has been no significant change in the smoothed index value since 1999.

From all years for which data are available (1990-2016), counts from 151 sites contribute to the trend analysis in England (sites that been surveyed for at least two years and at which whiskered/Brandt's bat have been recorded in a least one year).
