National Bat Care Conference 2018

Date of event: 24 February 2018

Venue for event: Salford City Academy, Manchester

Booking is now open!

This is a one-day event for anyone involved with bat care in the UK. It is being organised jointly between Maggie Brown, of Bat Care News and the West Yorkshire Bat Hospital, and BCT.

The aim of the conference is to provide an opportunity for bat rehabilitators (new and experienced) and veterinary professionals to share knowledge and update skills in bat rehabilitation.

The day rate is £45 (£40 for BCT members, registered members of the BCT Bat Care Network, and/or members of affiliated networks), which includes a sandwich lunch and refreshments. (See cancellation conditions below.)

Registration will be open from 9am.

Morning session - Delegates will hear from a range of speakers on a diverse range of subjects including the initial assessment of casualties, practical bat care issues, working within the law and maintaining bat care standards. We will share more details of the talks programme when it is finalised.

After lunch - there will be the choice of seven expert-led workshops:

  • Bat species identification for bat carers
  • Bat care for complete beginners
  • Managing disease risk (with particular reference to rabies)
  • Solving the problem of lost babies
  • Making the most of a large outdoor flight cage (with particular reference to baby bats and dependent juveniles)
  • Examining bats, recognising problems and anticipating outcomes (for welfare reasons this workshop will use dead bats) - there will be two parallel workshops on this topic

Final session - this will be an open forum discussion with the Conference closing at 5pm.

Address: Salford City Academy, Northfleet Road, Eccles, Manchester M30 7PQ

Please note the venue is accessible by public transport; buses 10 and 63 stop at the Salford City Academy bus stop and there is free parking on site for anyone driving to the conference.

Should you need overnight accommodation, there are a number of accommodation options in the centre of Manchester if you are arriving in Manchester Picadilly or there are several Premier Inn/Travel Lodge hotels near the Trafford Centre which is the other side of M60 to the conference venue.

Records Request

Tricia Scott, a bat carer based in Warwickshire, has a request for carers. Would you be willing to share details of the species, weights and lengths of the bats you have had in your care? If so please complete this spreadsheet and email it to Tricia. Tricia will then present the collated results back to the conference and demonstrate the value of shared records.

Cancellations: we are able to offer a £40/£35 refund for cancellations made before 10 February 2018. Regrettably we are not able to provide a refund if cancellations are made after this date.
