Nathusius' pipistrelle

Pipistrellus nathusii

Species factsheet; Distribution and abundance

Nathusius’ pipistrelle is a rare bat in the UK, though records have increased in recent years. Distribution data on Nathusius' pipistrelle have been collected by the Nathusius' pipistrelle Survey and more recently by the National Nathusius' Pipistrelle Project.

Key results from the National Nathusius' Pipistrelle Project include:

  • Stable isotope analysis of fur samples of Nathusius pipistrelles caught during the project, carried out by the University of Exeter, suggest that these bats have a migratory origin further northeast than the UK, and that the Nathusius’ pipistrelles originated from more northerly latitudes than soprano pipistrelles.
  • Maternity colonies have been discovered in Kent and Northumberland.
  • Four long distant migratory records have been found: one bat ringed in Britain was rediscovered in Holland, a bat from Latvia was recaptured in Sussex and two bats from Lithuania were recaptured in Kent.

Distribution and abundance

Nathusius' pipistrelle is rare but widespread throughout Great Britain. It is more abundant in Northern Ireland. It is also recorded in the Channel Islands.
