Introductory Bat Detector Workshops
These workshops are designed to ensure that there are trained volunteers able to carry out our survey work for the purposes of monitoring the status of the UK's bat populations.
An important part of identifying bats with heterodyne detectors rests with our own hearing abilities. By familiarising ourselves with the basic elements of bat sound and training our hearing through practice, we can begin to identify bat species in the field.
Our "Using Your Ears" workshop introduces the four main elements of bat calls that can be used to help differentiate between species in the field: repetition, rhythm, tonal quality and pitch.
The workshop will be followed by a bat walk, during which attendees will be able to put their training to the test!
We also run mini workshops on the Field and Waterway Surveys which will guide you through all of the steps to taking part in these surveys. These workshops include a practical session where you plan and take part in a mock survey to help you get ready to go and do your own Field and Waterway Surveys.
These workshops are introductory courses designed specifically for volunteers to carry out our surveys. Professionals are therefore kindly asked to allow places on these event to be taken up by volunteers, and to attend the training courses tailored towards carrying out survey work on a professional basis.
Some of these workshops are funded by OPAL (http://www.opalexplorenature.org/)
