UK Biodiversity Indicators released

7 August 2017

The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) have recently released the latest UK Biodiversity Indicators report. The report provides a broad look at overarching trends in UK biodiversity, as such it is an excellent tool for providing a summary of the situation to a variety of audiences ranging from the general public through to policy makers. The information is also used as part of the report to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to which the UK is a signatory.

We are all extremely thankful to all the thousands of volunteer citizen scientist that have contributed to this report via the data collected through the National Bat Monitoring Programme (NBMP). In 2016 alone, a total of 2,131 sites were surveyed by 960 volunteers. The NBMP data contributed towards indicator C8 (“Mammals of the wider countryside (bats)”). The report used data from summer field surveys, roost counts and winter hibernation counts to show changes in the population size of eight widespread bat species.
