Get involved in our Sunrise/Sunset Survey this weekend!

22 July 2011

BCT are enlisting the help of the public this summer to help them survey bat numbers and locations. With land use change, pesticide use and building works affecting habitats and food supplies, bats are under increasing pressure and it’s more important than ever to keep an eye on their populations. So far BCT has had a terrific response from volunteer surveyors. People up and down the country are spending their evenings and early mornings in the garden this weekend to monitor bat populations in our Sunset/Sunrise Surveys, which will be used in the National Bat Monitoring Programme. This is used to indicate changes in bat populations and is vital for bat conservation and policy.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or a regular surveyor you can get involved in this survey and help BCT keep track of bat numbers throughout the country. To get involved download aSunset/Sunrise form and instruction pack. The survey involves waiting in a place where you think bats may use, or walking a route past buildings or trees where you think they may be roosting. If you have seen bats in your area before these are good places to start! Or see our interactive batscape for more tips.

The survey is taking place this weekend but don’t worry – you can take part any time up until the 14th August! Good luck!
