SURVEYING AT SPOTS
(for pipistrelles)
Surveying at Spot 1
On completion of Walk 1 you should arrive at Spot 1 where you should get ready to begin surveying for pipistrelle bats only.
If you are carrying out a repeat survey you should make sure that you are standing as close as possible to the place described by the previous surveyor.
If you have a GPS system mark down the grid reference of spot 1 so that anyone can easily find it again.
When you are ready to begin, re-tune your detector to 50kHz and hold it up again at 45 degrees.
Record any pipistrelle activity for exactly 2 minutes (using a stopwatch). Count the number of bat passes for each species.
If you are unsure which pipistrelle (common or soprano) the bat pass is, but you are sure it is a pipistrelle bat, note these down as “unsure”.
