Planning Your Real Route
To plan your route, look at the map and identify where there are public footpaths and rights of way as these will be safest at night and generally present fewer obstacles.
Make a note of any sections where you will need to enter privately owned land.
The idealised route is designed so that you finish back at the start. Because the transect route is a closed loop, you can start wherever provides easiest access (usually where you can legally and safely leave your transport).
It is perfectly acceptable for the route to extend slightly beyond the boundary edge of the 1km square into surrounding squares but make sure you can mark it on the map.
